#WTF – Craft Beer?

Craft Beer | What the Froth is Craft Beer? Is it Worth all That Froth?

Very simply – noun

“a beer made in a traditional or non-mechanized way by a small brewery.”

So, the next time you someone asks you if the bottled beer in your hand is a craft beer, you know what to tell them!
Bangalore has several brewpubs – what on earth is a brewpub?

Brewpubs – These are small microbreweries that make craft beer – freshly brewed by their brewmasters. Once conditioned after fermentation, the beers are ready to be tapped. A brewpub has it’s pub right there on the premises. Brewery + Pub = Brewpub. Here in Bangalore, local state laws prohibit the distribution and consumption of these craft beers outside premises.

Microbreweries – These are small craft breweries that are able to (by law) transport their beers off premises. They may not have a retail store or pub on site. A great example of this concept in India is Gateway Brewing Company in Mumbai or Doolally in Pune. State laws in Maharashtra allow them to keg their beers once tapped and these can be distributed to various restaurants, bars and pubs across the state. Doolally for example brews in Pune and has a brewpub on-site but they also transport their kegs by road to their newly opened branch in Bandra, Mumbai.

Watch the Hopumentary below for North America’s side of the story! They have the fastest growing craft beer movement in the world and it is spreading rapidly!

For most of the 20th century, beer was dominated by large-scale breweries like Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Coors. By the early 80’s, through industry consolidation there were little more than 100 breweries left in the US. The result was an entirely American style of beer, one that had been diluted, homogenized and mass produced. In this environment, American beer lovers seeking quality and variety began brewing their own with a few intrepid pioneers eventually going commercial. With this, a new movement in American brewing began, one of smaller producers focusing on quality over quantity. This is a story of Craft Beer.
